The DEI Industry Index scores 85+ industries and sectors on their relative DEI performance in their ability to ensure a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment for the people working in this industry or sector.
These scores reflect the diversity of an industry’s population and how well industry performs in respect to accommodating that diversity and ensuring participation of all its members.
What does DEI look like in an Industry?
With the DEI Industry Index, Denominator accounts for Diversity by measuring all the possible ways an industry or sector might be operating differently, be that in terms of its gender ratios or the diversity in accepting people of different sexuality, ethnicity, or religious orientation.
Equity is focused on the industry’s actions to accommodate for people’s cultural, physical, or other Diversity differences to participate in an equal manner. We look at how well an industry is regulated to incorporate measures of fairness and equal treatment into their institutions, unions etc. Indicators that affect Equity in the DEI Industry Index are therefore initiatives that enable individuals either by providing unchallenging access to get jobs within that industry or sector or by compensating individuals fairly.
The last pillar of DEI, Inclusion, aims at identifying barriers of entry for certain groups and promote policies that foster a tolerant and including environment for everyone. This pillar ensures that individuals have room to thrive, and that cultural and physical Diversity is welcomed and tolerated.
How are industries rated and scored
Industries & Sectors are scored both on an aggregated/total DEI performance and the performance on the various dimensions of DEI such as Gender, Race/Ethnicity, Age, Sexuality, Education, Health, Disability etc.
The DEI Industry Index consists of two main components. The first component considers each industry’s score based on its performance across the X indicators.
The second component considers companies’ aggregated DEI performance in each industry/sector to ensure that the DEI Industry Index captures not just the macro level DEI framework and performance, but also the actual DEI behaviour within each industry.
The DEI Industry Index is calculated by the following formula:
Methodology
Each industry receives an Industry Index score which factors in the average performance of the individual companies that make up an industry as well as an Industry only score based on the DEI performance of the industry/sector itself.
